Quick Fact

A Home Energy Audit is a useful tool when considering home energy improvements.  Audits help identify the problem areas before trying to prioritize a solution.

How to Prioritize your Energy Improvements

Prioritizing energy efficient improvements is not only smart but may be the only way homeowners can afford individual upgrades.

Based on the energy savings per dollar spent, the following is a list of improvements ranked in order of cost-effectiveness:

  1. Sealing or replacing heating and cooling ductwork.
  2. Proper levels of insulation in attic and walls (attic insulation to an R-38 standard, and walls to an R-13 standard).
  3. Weatherstripping and caulking around doors, windows, and other gaps and cracks throughout the home.
  4. Whole-house ventilation overhead fans and wind turbins.
  5. High-performance dual-pane windows and sliders.
  6. High-efficient water heating system.
  7. High-efficient heating and air conditioning system.
  8. Solar energy panels (photovoltaics).

Consumer Alert

Prioritizing is so important because not all energy improvements need to be done at the same time.  They can be spaced out over a period of time based on affordability and effectiveenss.
