According to several energy studies performed over the years, air infiltration (air entering and leaving the building envelope) can consume a substantial amount of energy used for heating and cooling. Drafty homes not only waste energy but make it almost impossible to maintain desired comfort levels. Imagine trying to heat your home on a cold windy evening with a 3x3 size window left open. That is the equivalent of heating a house with air leaks.

To stop air leakage, you must first identify the gaps, cracks, and holes in your home, then seal them. If you are a skilled do-it-yourselfer, you may choose to tackle this project on your own. Various types of weather stripping, caulking, and other materials are needed to complete your project.

Another alternative is to hire a contractor who uses high-tech diagnostic equipment (blower-door) to measure and pinpoint air leakage throughout your home. Once located, trained professionals will then begin the extensive process of sealing the leaks. All homes should be tested before and after sealing so that the results can be documented. 

Air leaks usually occur in the following areas:

  • Attic access hatch
  • Door sashes and frames
  • Recessed lighting
  • Baseboards
  • Plumbing penetrations
  • Electric outlets and switch plates
  • Chimney penetrations
  • Dropped ceilings
  • Window sashes and frames
  • Sill plates
